Isolepis cernua is a semi-aquatic plant with a bushy, flexible, trailing habit, prized for its appearance reminiscent of broom fibers—hence its trade name, "fiber optic grass." It also produces tiny, silvery-white, bead-like flowers at the end of each stem, resembling points of light, hence the "fiber optic" effect.
