The Venus flytrap is probably the most popular carnivorous plant. It belongs to the group of carnivorous plants with active traps, its jaws snapping shut quickly on its prey. The captured insects provide nitrogen, an essential nutrient for its growth. However, after being used a few times, the traps eventually turn black and die. It is recommended to remove the dead traps as they appear. For this reason, avoid feeding it insects; it thrives on its own. It prefers to be somewhat root-bound in its pot and requires a winter dormancy period. The Venus flytrap does not tolerate excess minerals found in tap water at all. This excess could be fatal. It is important to water it with demineralized water, which can be purchased at a pharmacy, or with rainwater. Melted snow also works very well!
