Product Description:
Armadillidium klugii 'Montenegro' (often called "Clown Locus") are among the most spectacular and sought-after isopods in bioactive terrarium keeping. Sporting a magnificent coloration ranging from reddish-orange to dark brown, punctuated with distinctive yellow and white spots on their backs, they bring an incredible visual touch to display enclosures. In addition to their beauty, they actively participate in terrarium cleaning by consuming organic debris (dead leaves, decaying wood, uneaten food) and help maintain a cleaner and more stable substrate.
They primarily stay under hiding places, bark, and in leaf litter, and perform very well in well-ventilated Mediterranean, semi-arid to semi-tropical terrariums with a good humidity gradient.
Quantity: 12+
Highlights:
Incredible color pattern: Unique "clown" patterns highly prized by collectors and perfect for display terrariums
Good "cleanup crew": Efficiently consumes plant debris and decaying organic matter
Active behavior: A curious and fascinating species to observe, especially during feeding time
Excellent ability to roll into a ball: Perfectly controls itself into a complete sphere when threatened (rolly-polly behavior)
Robust form: Very hardy once established
Tips & Parameters:
Humidity: Moderate with a marked gradient. Ideally, create a humid zone (approximately 1/3 of the tank with sphagnum moss) and a drier zone (2/3 of the tank). Tip: They particularly appreciate well-ventilated environments.
Temperature: Approximately 21–26°C (tolerates average room temperatures well).
Food:
Continuous litter of dead leaves and decaying wood (essential base)
Supplements: La Swamp woodlouse food, small seeds, occasional protein, small pieces of vegetables
Calcium: Always provide a source (cuttlebone, La Swamp calcium, well-dried eggshells) to ensure successful molting.
Caution: This species is very sensitive to poor ventilation and excessive stagnant moisture. Ensure excellent air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent mold or spider mite infestations.
